Exterior Painting in Yukon: A New Roof, Iron Ore Trim, and One Awesome Violet Door

Nobody plans their exterior repaint around a hail storm. But when a bad one rolled through Yukon and left Pamela and her husband needing a whole new roof and gutters, they did something smart: instead of just putting the house back the way it was, they asked what it could look like instead.

Nothing was wrong with the house before the storm, either. It was a big, well-built brick home on a corner lot that looked like a hundred other big, well-built brick homes in the metro. Builder-basic everything, the kind of house you drive past without seeing.

The Smart Part: Painting While the Gutters Were Off

The roof replacement meant the old gutters came off the house. Most homeowners wouldn’t think twice about that detail, but it’s exactly the window a paint crew hopes for. With the gutters down, every inch of fascia board is exposed and reachable, with no cutting in around brackets and no edges hidden behind a gutter run. The wood that’s hardest to paint well on a normal job was, for a short window, the easiest.

The Look: Let the Brick Be Brick, Let the Trim Do the Talking

The new roof went on in a deep charcoal that reads nearly black, and that became the anchor for everything else. To carry the look down from the roofline, they chose Iron Ore, a rich soft black, for the woodwork: fascia, soffits, gable peaks, and window trim. Against the original blonde brick, that dark trim makes the whole house look crisp and modern. Same brick, completely different presence on the street.

And then there’s the front door.

Awesome Violet was Pamela’s pick. She had a little twinkle in her eye when she told us that was the color she wanted, and her husband had a bit of a smirk about it. Maybe not his first choice. You could tell he loved how happy it made her, though, and that right there is most couples’ color conversation. The door is where a home gets to be personal, and under that stone archway, against all that dark trim, hers is perfect.

The Careful Part: Painting Around a Roof Full of Solar Panels

This roof carries a full array of solar panels, and the chimney sits right beside them on the back slope. Painting fascia and a chimney that close to panels means slowing down, masking everything off, and keeping the spray controlled, because you can’t undo overspray on somebody’s solar panels.

Photos don’t usually show that part of a paint job. Cutting a clean line on an open wall is easy. Doing it next to equipment worth more than the paint job is where a crew earns its keep.
